Drink
With the spectacular harbour on our doorstep and cosmopolitan streets offering prime people watching potential, is it any wonder Sydneysiders have turned outdoor drinking into a fine art?
With a glass of wine or a schooner in one hand and a newspaper in the other, there’s nothing we like better than pulling up a chair or patch of grass and watching the world go by. And our hoteliers know it: Sydney boasts some of the best outdoor and waterside bars in Australia, if not the world.
But that’s not to say we don’t know how to do a great indoor watering hole. Sydney is home to a plethora of bijoux and backstreet bars where it’s a toss-up as to whether the creative cocktails or the stylish interiors are the biggest draw.
VIP venues abound – simply don your sharpest suit or most vertiginous stilettos and follow the beautiful people to the latest happening nightspot. It helps to be in the know, as the really cool places don’t advertise and many aren’t signposted.
If exclusivity isn’t your style, make yourself at home in one of our fair city’s friendly neighbourhood pubs. Check out the city centre, The Rocks and Surry Hills for hotels whose history is as rich and colourful as their beer and wine selection. It’s not hard to find a pub without pokies and even easier to locate one with live music so you can shake your tailfeather between drinks.
Wherever you choose to wet your whistle, rest assured there’s no such thing as last orders in Sydney.
